It is a quiet place, and there is a 13-story stone pagoda at Jeonghyesaji, designated as National Treasure 40. In the valley right next to Dokrakdang, there are many summer vacationers.

It is located near Gyeongju Oksansheng, one of the nine locations of the Korean World Heritage Site, “Korean Seowon”. From Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal, take bus No. 203 and get off at Gyeongju Oksanshouin, the final stop, and you will see Dongnakdang House in front of you. It seemed possible to stay overnight.

Dongnakdang House is actually a sarangchae (men’s quarters) situated to the rear of Okseonseowon Confucian Academy, where a memorial ceremony is held for Yi Eon-jeok (1491-1553), a scholar of neo-Confucian doctrine of the mid-Joseon period. It is regarded as a historic site as Yi stayed there after leaving public office. Built in 1516 (the 11th year of the reign of King Jungjong of the Joseon Dynasty), the house measures four kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) at the front and two kan at the sides, and sits on a low base. The roof has a hip-and-gable roof and resembles a 八 when viewed from the front. On the right there is a wide, open wooden floor (measuring 3 kan) while on the left there is a hot-floored room (1 kan). Certain marks suggest that originally the partition on the far right was used as a room and that the daecheong, i.e. the main hall, measuring two kan, was in the middle. The main pillars of the daecheong are rounded, and its ceiling (built as a lotus lantern ceiling)’s wooden materials are exposed. Its structure is unusual in that a window made with thin wooden ribs was built into the wall next to Dongnakdang House, and commands an attractive view of the stream flowing past the front of the house. In addition, a pavilion near the stream and to the rear of Dongnakdang House attests to our ancestor's wisdom in seeking harmony with nature.

The exhibition of the pavilion in the ward of Gotatsu City, Dojodo, is completed. Dongnakdang House is a building behind the Gyeongju Oksanshoin, which is dedicated to Dr. Lihiko Susai. This is a historic building where Dr. Lee Hiko-Dai (1491-153) lived after he quit his official post and returned to his hometown. Built in the 11th year of Jungjong (1516) during the Joseon Dynasty, this building is built on a low platform and has a scale of 4 front and 2 side, and the roof has an "eight" shape when viewed from the side. It is a gabled house. When facing the house, the three rooms on the right side are on the side of the wide board, and the front is fully open, and the ondol room is built by closing the space on the left side. However, since there are traces of the room being used as a room by blocking the space on the far right, it can be seen that the main office was only in the middle two rooms. The pillars are round pillars, and the ceiling of the main office is a continuous light ceiling with the entire skeleton exposed. The wall next to the Dongnakdang House has a window made of bones made of thin wood, and it is a very unique space composition that you can see the stream in front of you through this window. The pavilion in the stream behind the Dongnakdang House also expresses the spatiality that naturally tries to merge.

It was great to have the opportunity to experience a hanok house. The only downside was that there were more flies than mosquitoes, so I couldn't sleep well. Still, it was nice to have a courtyard when the door was opened.
