For travelers it used to be a hot place to visit. This was because of the street performances that took place before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. At the current time, street performances have been strictly banned in efforts to prevent any more casualties. Uniqueness of Hongik Univ area: "홍대 걷고싶은거리" (Hongik Univ A place you want to walk around), is a street filled with people almost every time. The streets are usually filled with young adults in their early twenties. If you want to purchase clothing that may help you look trendy and 'Korean'. Those streets are your must go-to sort of area. There are several night clubs around the Mapo-gu (Hongik Univ) area. There are also plenty of bars, pubs, restaurants, and cafes to go around and spend your day. Precautions: Hongik univ tends to have heretic cults who tend to approach you (korean & non-korean) and may start their first conversation by asking you either directions or are you a businessman or a student etc... (They may seem harmless) but the conversation they may start with you is about '도' or "도를 믿으세요?" Sort of scam. They ask you to buy them a drink at a nearby cafe and may take you to an isolated location where they ask you to perform rituals that lost a lot of money. Its important to have fun and to have a good time. But if you are old enough, do it at YOUR OWN RISK. In case of Emergency or questions Due to the dense population of foreigners visiting and or living in Hongik area, Mapo-gu police stations have 'tourist police'. Law enforcement officers can be reached by dialing '119' / '112' . or tour guides dressed in red clothes and words that has those wording on them.
