1910년 일제가 나라를 강탈하자 국치를 원통해하며
독약을 마시고 순국 하였다. 매천야록, 오하기문등의
저서가 있다.
"벼슬을 한 번도 한적이 없는 분으로 녹봉을 받아본적이 없다. 그래서 자신이 죽어야 할 의리는 없다. 하지만 자신은 선비이고 국가가500년 이나 선비를 길러왔다고 하면서 나라가 망했는데 죽은 선비가 하나도 없다면 부끄럽고 원통한 일이라고 하면서 스스로 목숨을 끊었다. 이소식을 듣은 한 화가가 생전에 찍어놓은 사진을 보고 선생을 그렸는데
그것이 바로 유명한 황현 선생의 초상화이다".
