It is a beautiful holy place. It feels like it has been carefully cared for. The appearance of the old Gongso is preserved. The St. Mary's Garden between the main hall and the small church, sculptures and places where you can pray are beautiful.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 괴산군 연풍IC 나오면 오른쪽으로 성당 건물이 보여서 잠깐 들렀다. 이정표는 연풍성지 로 되어 있다. 카톨릭 순교자분들을 기리는 자료들이 많은 곳 이다. 사형할 때 사용됐던 형구 돌도 전시 되어 있고, 한국 초대 대주교 비도 세워져 있고, 300년 된 향청 건물도 볼 수 있다.
When I came out of Yeonpung IC in Goesan-gun, I saw the cathedral building on the right, so I stopped by. The milestone is Yeonpung Sacred Site. It is a place where there are many materials commemorating the Catholic martyrs. Hyeonggu stones used during the death penalty are also on display, a monument to the first archbishop of Korea is erected, and a 300-year-old Hyangcheong building can be seen.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 1791년(정조 15) 신해교난(辛亥敎難)으로 연풍지역에 은거하던 가톨릭 교인 추순옥(秋順玉)·이윤일(李尹一)·김병숙·김말당·김마루 등이 1801년(순조 1) 신유교난(辛酉敎難) 때 처형당한 자리이다.
괴산읍에서 연풍, 문경 방면으로 20km 정도 떨어져 있고, 문경새재 서쪽 기슭의 고지에 자리잡고 있다. 연풍면은 소백산맥의 산릉에 속한 험지여서 예로부터 경기, 서울을 중심으로 일어난 박해를 피해 은신처를 찾는 순교자들의 피난처로 이용되어 일찍이 신도촌이 형성되어 왔다.
1963년 천주교회가 연풍공소의 예배소로 사용하기 위해 조선시대의 향청 건물을 구입하였는데, 이곳은 전에 헌병주재소, 경찰지서 등으로 사용된 적도 있었다. 이곳에서 논과 집터 정리 작업을 하면서 박해 때 죄인들을 죽이는 도구로 사용된 형구돌 3개를 발견하였고, 1968년에는 한국천주교 103성인(聖人)에 속하는 황석두(黃錫斗:1811~1866)의 고향이 연풍으로 드러남에 따라 성지 개발이 본격화되었다. 황석두는 1813년(순조 13) 연풍면 병방(兵房)골에서 태어나 1866년(고종 3) 충청남도 보령군 오천면 갈매못성지에서 순교하였다.
1974년 천주교회에서 이곳을 성역화하였고, 1982년 평해 황씨 문중산에 묻힌 황석두의 유해를 이장해왔다. 성지 내에는 옛 연풍향청 건물과 높이 8.5m의 십자가상, 황석두의 입상과 묘가 있다. 십자가상 왼쪽에는 역시 갈매못성지에서 순교한 다블뤼 주교, 위앵 신부, 오메트르 신부 등 5인의 성인상과 순교현양비(殉敎顯楊碑)가 서 있다. 문 앞에는 처형석(處刑石)을 전시하고 있으며, 최초의 한국인 주교인 노기남 대주교의 동상이 있다. 매년 2만여 명이 순례를 위해 이곳을 찾고 있다.

In 1791 (15th year of King Jeongjo), Catholics Chu Sunok (秋順玉), Lee Yunil (李尹一), Kim Byungsuk, Kim Maldang, and Kim Maru, etc. This is the place where he was executed during the Shinyukyonan (辛酉敎難).
It is about 20km away from Goesan-eup in the direction of Yeonpung and Mungyeong, and it is located on a hill at the western foot of Mungyeong Saejae. Since Yeonpung-myeon is a mountainous area in the Sobaek Mountains, it has been used as a refuge for martyrs seeking shelter from persecution in Gyeonggi-do and Seoul since ancient times.
In 1963, the Catholic Church purchased the Joseon Dynasty Hyangcheong Building to use as a place of worship for Yeonpung Gongso. In this place, while cleaning up the rice fields and the site of the house, they discovered three hyeonggu stones that were used as tools to kill criminals during persecution. As it was revealed, the development of the holy land began in earnest. Hwang Seok-du was born in Byeongbang-gol, Yeonpung-myeon, in 1813 (13th year of King Sunjo) and was martyred in 1866 (3rd year of King Gojong) at Galmaemot Holy Land in Ocheon-myeon, Boryeong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do.
In 1974, the Catholic Church made this place a sanctuary, and in 1982, the remains of Hwang Seok-du, who were buried in Munjungsan of the Hwang family in Pyeonghae, have been relocated. Inside the holy site are the old Yeonpunghyangcheong building, a 8.5m high cross, and a statue and tomb of Hwang Seok-du. To the left of the cross is the statue of five saints, including Bishop Davlu, Father Wien, and Father Ometre, who were also martyred in the Galmamot Holy Land, and the monument to the martyrdom. In front of the door, an execution stone is displayed, and there is a statue of Archbishop No Ki-nam, the first Korean bishop. About 20,000 people visit this place every year for pilgrimage.
