★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 휴정서원은 기호 사림의 종장인 김장생의 친족과 그의 학통을 받은 문인들만을 제향한 점에서 여타 기호계 서원과는 의미가 다르다. 연산 지역은 호서 지방의 대표적인 서원인 논산 돈암 서원이 있는 곳이다. 기호학파의 거두 김장생을 제향한 논산 돈암 서원이 존재하고 있는데 다시 그의 친족 문인들로 구성된 휴정서원이 세워진 것은 돈암 서원에 대한 수호적인 성격을 지녔음을 의미한다. 탑정 저수지가 완성되면서 서원이 수몰되자 1944년 현재의 위치에 단소(壇所)를 설치하였다가, 1985년 사우를 복원하였다.
1992년 10월 28일 논산시 향토유적 제16호로 지정되었다

It was designated as the 16th ruins of Nonsan-shi local ruins on October 28, 1992
