호남은행은 민족 자본 육성을 위해 현준호를 중심으로 한 한국인 지역 유지들이 힘을 모아 1920년에 설립한 은행이다.
일제의 식민지 금융 정책에 맞서 독자적으로 운영을 하다가 1942년에 동일은행과 강제로 통합되었고 이후 조흥은행으로 명맥이 이어졌다.
호남은행 목포지점은 목포 상권의 중심인 오거리에 세운 호남은행 목포지점 건물이다.
현재의 건물은 1929년 11월 11일에 신축한 것이다. 2층으로 된 사각형 모양의 벽돌 건물로 표면에 붉은색 타일을 붙여 멋스러움을 더한 것이 특징이다.
1897년 개항 이후 상업 도시로 성장한 목포에는 근대 금융 건축물이 많이 생겼는데, 현재는 이 건물만이 유일하게 남아 있다. 한국인이 설립하고 운영한 민족 은행이었다는
점에서 가치가 높은 근대 문화유산이다.

Hunan Branch Bank of Mokpo is Mokpo Hunan Branch Bank Building built in ohgeori commercial center of Mokpo.
The current building was built on November 11, 1929. It is a two-story, square-shaped brick building with red tiles on the surface, which adds a nice touch.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ex-honam bank,mokpo branch, was founded in 1929 by hyen jun ho and his colleague who was local worthies in honam(the traditional name of jeollado). It is the first and unique bank founded by korean. It is made by rectangular bricks and red tiles. so its looks is so beautiful. And the building has appreciated by its historical value as well as the only korean’s bank in honam. So this building has been recognized registered cultural properties
