고대도는 조선에 온 첫 개신교 선교사 카를 귀츨라프(Karl Friedrich August Gutzlaff, 1803∼1851)가 선교활동을 편 곳. 퀴즐라프는 1832년(순조 32년) 7월 25일부터 8월 12일까지 정착. 언더우드와 헨리아펜젤러보다 53년, 알렌보다 52년, 평양을 방문하여 대동강변에서 주민들에게 성경을 나눠주다 순교한 토마스 목사 보다 34년, 최초의 카톨릭 선교사인 불라서 신부 모방이 내한한 1836년보다 4년이나 앞선다.
귀츨라프는 한글을 1832년 11월 '중국의 보고(The Chinese Repository)'라는 잡지에 발표, 한글을 세계에 첫 번째로 소개한 중개자 역할도 수행.

Gutzllav published Hangeul in the magazine The Chinese Repository in November 1832, and also acted as the first mediator to introduce Hangeul to the world.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 고대도는 면적 0.92km2, 해안선 길이 4.3km인 고대도(古代島)는 삽시도 북쪽 4.5km에 위치하며, 대천항과 오천항에서 각각 16km, 태안반도 남쪽의 안면도 영목항과는 약 3km 떨어져 있다. 고대도는 충남에서 원산도 삽시도, 장고도 다음으로 큰 섬이나 마을은 단 하나뿐이다. 청정해역 어촌마을 고대도는 마한 말부터 마을이 형성된 섬으로 집터가 많아서 고대도 또는 '고뎜'이라고 한다. 이 곳은 배를 대는 선착장 방파제가 물에 깊숙이 박혔다. 고대도의 명물 중의 하나인 방파제. 이 방파제 가운데에 심어놓은 철제 가로등이 물속에 잠길 정도였다고 한다.고대도는 구불구불한 해안선 곳곳에 32개의 해수욕장을 자랑하는 태안반도 해변의 물속이 환히 들여다보일 정도로 깨끗한 청정해역이다. 인접해 있는 장고도와 함께 태안해안국립공원으로 지정된 곳이다.
