전국 최초의 공립 대안교육 특성화 중학교이다. 공립대안학교로 불린다. 처음에는 학교 부적응 학생들을 위한 피나처로 여겨졌으나 성장을 거듭하면서 제대로 된 교육을 찾는 학부모들과 학생들이 찾아오고 있다. 2019년 현재 교장공모제를 통해 현직 선생님이셨던 김범주 교장선생님을 3대 교장선생님으로 모시고 학교교육의 대안을 제시할 수 있는 학교로 발돋움 하고 있다. 더디가도 함께가는 길을 찾기 위해 학생들도 자치학생회와 동아리등을 개설하여 자신이 원하는 일을 할 수 있도록 스스로 움직여가고 교사들은 워크샵을 지속하면서 대안교육에 대해 고민하고 학부모들은 학부모회 활동을 통해 지원하고 있다. 한 학년당 30명으로 이루어져 있다. 윈드 오케스트라 관악단이 존재하여 전국관악경연대회에서 매년 수상하고 있으며 연간 정기연주회도 열고 있다. 산익등반도 학년별로 나뉘어 1학년 지리산 2학년 한라산 3학년 백두산 또는 해외봉사를 다녀온다. 기숙사 생활을 하고 있으며 학교에 오지 못하는 것이 벌이 될 정도로 학생들의 만족도가 높다. 대안학교에 관신이 있다면 꼭 한 번 방문해 보아야 한다.
