이경석(1595~1671)선생은 임진왜란이 한창이던 1595년에 태어나 인조의 무능함이 낳은 대참사인 병자호란을 몸소 겪었던 분이다. 인조는 남한산성에 나와 청 태종을 향해 머리를 세 번 땅헤 찧고 아홉 번 절하는 '삼고구배(영화 <남한산성>에서는 인조가 '조선의 흙냄새를 맡았다.'라는 낭만적 표현을 사용했다. 당시 인조는 코가 얼어 냄새를 맡지도 못했는데 말이다.) '의 예를 행하면서 항복을 하였다. 참으로 인간 인조는 이런 수모를 겪고 민족에게 고통을 주고자 자기 스스로 갑옷입고 칼을 차서 광해군을 몰아내었던가? 그 날 남한산성에서 그 모습을 바라보는 자존심 강한 송시열은 속으로 아마 이런 생각을 했을 것이다. '내가 저런 인간을 주군으로 모시고 살아야 되는가?' 아마도 깊은 철학적 고민의 시간이 아니겠는가? 이후 청은 조선과의 사이에서 일어났던 일을 비석에 새기라고 했다. 이것이 '삼전도비문'인데 당시 신하들은 국왕 인조의 눈치를 보느라 어느 누구도 비문을 쓰겠다고 하는 사람이 없었다. 신하라고 임금에 대한 불경이라고 생각했던 것이다. 그런데 비문을 이경석 선생이 쓴 것이다. 아마도 본인이 전주 이씨 왕실의 후손이라 그랬을 것이다. 주변에서도 남이 쓰는 것보다는 왕실 사람이 쓰는 것이 훗날 화를 덜 받을 것이라고 판단했을 것이다. 불운한 시대에 무능하고 비겁한 군주를 만나 굴욕을 몸소 다 받았으니 이 어찌 훌륭한 일이 아니겠는가?
