상학마을은 경지가 넓게 분포하는 평지에 자리한 농촌마을로, 남쪽으로 섬진강의 지류가 흐른다.
상학마을이 위치한 상학리는 지역적으로 황새매 위쪽이 되므로 상학리라 하였다. 상학마을은 상학리가 시작된 마을로, 상학마을이라는 지명유래 또한 상학리의 그것과 같다.
상학마을은 입석 2기를 비롯, 느티나무와 귀목나무 등 고목이 있어 전통마을로 알려져 왔다.
