1971년 9월 18일 남산국민학교로 개교하였다.
1981년 3월 8일 병설유치원을 개원하였고,
1996년 남산초등학교로 개칭되었다.
교훈은 "바른 마음으로 서로 도우며 부지런한 생활을 하자"이며,
교목은 향나무, 교화는 장미이다.
팬클럽, 게임, 유머, 배드민턴 등 전체 17개의 동호회활동이 이루어지고 있으며 방과후 학교활동으로 한자, 플롯, 클라리넷, 컴퓨터, 종이접기, 보충학습 등 다양한 활동이 이루어지고 있다.
