사 본사의 말사이며. 다섯개 꽃봉
우리를 닮은 대운산(742m) 자락
에 위치해 있다. 신라 중기에 고
봉선사가 대원사(현재는 대원사 터만 남아 있음)를 창건하면서
세운 암자이며 영남제일의 명당
이라고 극찬을 할 만큼 풍광이 아
름답기가 그지 없다. 또 500년 세월을 오롯이 보듬은 노거수(팽
나무)가 고찰의 미를 느끼게 하고
육신에 덕지덕지 붙은 마음의 욕
심을 비워내는 시간이기도 하다.
울산의 12경(태화강국가정원,대
왕암,가지산사계,신불산억새,간절곶일출,반구대암각화,주전몽돌해변,울산대공원,울산대교,장생포고래문화마을,외고산옹기마을)중 한 곳이기도 하고,1999년 석남사,문수사,신흥사 등과 함께

되었기도 하다. 내원암을 오르 전
주변엔 울산수목원과 자연휴양
림야영장, 그리고 인공폭포(벽계
폭포)와 맑은 대운천이 계곡을 이
루어 흐르고 야영장 제1,2,3,주
차장이 있어서 주차하기도 좋다.
물론 암자까지 차량으로 이동할 수도 있지만 운전에 능숙하지 못
하면 제3주차장을 이용하는 것을
추천한다. 그 이유는 암자로 향하
는 길이 아주 협소해 차량이 마주
하면 비켜갈 수 없는 어려운 상태
에 놓여 둘 중 한 대는 약간의 공
간이 있는 곳 까지 후진해야 하는
아찔하고 진땀을 뻘뻘 흘려야하
는 경험을 할수도 있기 때문이다.
그뿐만아니라 꼬부랑길에 한쪽
은 계곡낭떨어지고, 선택은 자신
의 몫이랄 수 있겠다. 입장료 및 주차료는 없다.
