★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Jongmyo is the supreme state shrine where the royal ancestral tablets of deceased kings and queens of Joseon Dynasty(1392-1910, the last monarchy in Korean history) are enshrined and sacrificial rites are performed for them. Its construction began in December, 1394 shortly after King Taejo, the founder of Joseon Dynasty, moved the seat of his throne to Hanyang, the present day Seoul, from Gaeseong in October of the same year. The construction was completed in September, 1395.
The Main Hall (Jeongjeon) keeps 49 royal spirit tablets and the Hall of Eternal Peace (Yeongnyeongjeon) keeps 34 royal spirit tablets. The Main Hall has spirit tablets of those kings who command great respect and their queens.
A stone-covered path runs straight north from the main entrance of Jongmyo toward the Main Hall compound. The path has three lanes: the raised central lane here is also reserved for the royal spirits and ritual offerings, and stretches to the Main Hall compound, while the lower side lanes for the king and the crown prince part from the spirit lane midway in the direction of the king’s pavilion on the right side. The king prepared himself for rites, bathing and dressing up, at the pavilion. The narrow path is covered with rough stones with fluctuating surfaces, so the king would walk slowly with his mind focused on the ancestral rites.
Many famous architects including Frank Gehry praised Jongmyo's beauty and value. Jongmyo Shrine is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you are visiting Korea, I highly recommend visiting Jongmyo Shrine.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great shrine with very rich history. Had a local tour guide with good explanation of the history and each building.
Too bad didn't have the chance to experience the ceremonies and performances.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Relaxing park in middle of city with several monuments. Main one has 2 entrances closed for renovation until late 2022 but still visible and we'll worth the small 1,000KRW entry fee

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A fabulous part of the Korean culture that can be visited at fixed hours with an English-speaking guide. This is the place where the spirits of the past kings of Korea get down to be greeted by the royal family twice a year. One cannot visit Seoul without seeing the two main royal palace and this place. Pay attention to the road in the site and do not walk on the lane reserved for the spirits!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A calm, peaceful experience different from the palaces. UNESCO cultural heritage site worth a visit for minimal 1000 won entrance fee. Do check the guided tours schedule before going. Each tour is about 1 hour and you can only enter and leave together with the guide.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ? ?? ? we visited this place with my kids History class. The entry ticked cost 1,000₩ for adultand 500₩ for kids. Though their history teacher was not there our group visit the place with Jongmyo's assigned guide...she was wonderfully explained to kids . we went in October which is the perfect time to enjoy beautiful Autumn in koreaas well ..cause all shrines are surrounded by ginko and red maple trees... ? ?? ?
There was also a pond there which has sitting areas arround it so that one can sit and enjoy the view of ? birds and ducks .
There was also a small indoor botanical garden with lots of interesting looking and pretty plants ? ? ??. This garden was made by Japanese in world war 1. And they also made these shrine area as Zoo with lots animals... But as soon as Koreans ocuupied this area they send the animals to Seoul zoo and keep this botanical garden.
