The site of Baekje's royal palace, listed as a World Heritage Site ... The historical significance is different, but the appearance of the five-story pagoda towering over a large field is quiet and elegant. Seeing the stone pagoda that has been lonely for millennia, finds peace of mind.

This Five-story Stone Pagoda is located on a hill, about 2 km south of Wanggung-myeon, Iksan, which is known as the capital of Mahan. This pagoda consists of five stories, a single-tier foundation and some of the final. The foundation had been buried in the ground before it was dismantled and restored to the present shape in 1965. At each corners of the foundation is installed an octagonal corner stone serving as a corner column, between which long, square stones are piled up in imitation of wooden pagodas. The inside of the columns and stones is filled with earth, in which fragments of Baekje roof tiles are discovered. During the 1965 repair work, a sarira container was retrieved inside the base and the roof of the first story. The repair work also revealed a new fact that two central pillars are carved on each side of the foundation. Each story has a column at all corners, and the first story has two central pillars engraved on all sides. The thin, flat roofs are slightly upturned at the corners. The marks on the corners of the eaves suggest that wind-bells hung there. Each roof has a supporting stone on its top to hold the superstructure. Of the final, a stone base, an upside-down alms bowl, an upward-looking flower and a partly broken ring remain. The roofs retain characteristics of Baekje pagodas to some extent, which led to a controversy over the exact date of the pagoda's construction. Judging from the composition style of the foundation and the retrieved sarira container, this pagoda seems to have been the work of early Goryeo, which combines the styles of both Baekje and Silla pagodas. The relics retrieved during the 1965 repair work are designated as National Treasure No. 123 and are on display at the National Museum of Korea.
It is a stone pagoda located on a hill about 2km south of Wanggung-myeon, Iksan, which is known as the capital of the Mahan period. It is a figure of a five-story pagoda raised above the base of the first step. The original shape was revealed when the buried base was dismantled and repaired in 1965. The base of the pagoda is made of octagonal cornerstones at the four corners, and between the pillars, long and large square stones are stacked in a zigzag manner to reproduce the form of a wooden pagoda as it is in the stone pagoda. The space between the octagonal pillar and the square stones was filled with soil, and fragments of tiles from the Baekje period were also found. During the excavation, it was revealed that two pillar pieces were carved in the middle of each side of the base, and a sari device was found in the middle of the roof stone on the first floor of the tower and in the foundation stone supporting the central pillar of the tower. From the 1st floor to the 5th floor, pillar shapes were engraved on each of the four corners of the body stone of the pagoda bride, and on the body stone of the 1st floor, two pillar shapes were engraved in the center of the face. The roof stone is thin and flat at the bottom, but it is raised lightly upwards from the four corners, and there are holes for attaching bells. On the upper surface of each floor roof stone, another stone was inserted to support the body stone. A top headdress remains on the roof stone on the 5th floor. The pagoda retains some of the styles of Baekje stone pagodas, such as the thin and wide roof stone, the flat surface that receives rainwater, and the fact that the roof stone on the first floor of the pagoda is wider than the base. There was a divided opinion about when it was built, but when the construction style of the base and the style of the sari device found in the base were revealed during the repair work in 1965, the time period became relatively clear. In other words, it is presumed to be a work of the early Goryeo period in which some of the styles of Silla pagodas were harmonized with the Baekje style stone pagoda style that was popular until the Goryeo period in the old territory of Baekje. The relics of the Goryeo Dynasty found in this stone pagoda are collectively designated as national treasures and are kept at the National Museum of Korea. Recently, during the excavation process of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage in Buyeo, traces that could confirm that there was a wooden pagoda before the present stone pagoda were found at the bottom of the pagoda, drawing attention again.
The museum is currently closed due to quarantine management. It is difficult to think of the historical site where there were only stone pagodas in the past. It is well maintained, so it is good for outings with children. However, it was a pity that the cherry blossoms hadn't bloomed yet when I went. It seems to be in full bloom by now.

From Iksan Station, take the 65-1 bus and walk for about 40 minutes. Similar to Mireuksaji Stone Pagoda, but simpler I liked that the Baekje Tower feel was stronger. If you go up further, you can see the excavation site of the royal palace garden site. If you look down from the top of the hill, the panoramic view is good. Due to Corona and construction, the Relics Exhibition Hall was closed in April 22nd. It is scheduled to reopen, but it may take longer. Just looking at the stone pagoda is enough. If you add 10 minutes from the bus stop timetable, the bus will come.
