대한불교조계종 제15교구의 본사인 통도사(通度寺)의 말사이다. 신라 8대사찰의 하나로, 394년(내물왕 39)에 창건되었다고 하나 확실하지는 않다. 583년(진평왕 5) 증법(證法)이 중창하고 삼국통일 후 원효가 중국 승려 1,000명에게 《화엄경》을 설법하여 대도량(大道埸)을 이루었다.
748년(경덕왕 7) 추담(秋潭)이 중건하였다. 조선시대에 들어 1401년(태종 1) 대웅전을 중건하였으나 임진왜란 때 대부분 당우(堂宇)가 소실되어, 1617년(광해군 9)에 영운(靈雲)이 재건하고, 1749년(영조 25)에 보수하였다.
이 사찰에는 대웅전(보물 212호)과 약사전(藥師殿, 보물 146호)을 비롯하여 석조 여래좌상(石造如來坐像, 보물 519호)과 약사전 3층석탑(지방유형문화재 11호), 용선대(龍船臺) 석조 석가여래좌상(보물 295호) 등이 있다.

Gwanryongsa Temple in Hwawangsan, Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam
It is the Malsa Temple of Tongdosa Temple, the headquarters of the 15th parish of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order. It is one of the eight temples of Silla, and it is said to have been built in 394 (Naemul King 39), but it is not clear. In 583 (5th year of King Jinpyeong), after the reunification of the Three Kingdoms, Wonhyo preached “Hwaeomgyeong” to 1,000 Chinese monks, achieving a great road.
It was rebuilt by Chudam in 748 (King Gyeongdeok 7). In the Joseon Dynasty, Daeungjeon was rebuilt in 1401 (Taejong 1), but most of the Dang-woo was destroyed during the Imjin War, and Yeongun rebuilt in 1617 (Gwanghae-gun 9) and repaired in 1749 (Youngjo 25). .

부처님이 반야용선 앞에 타시고 서방정토 극락세계로 가시기 위해
화왕산 계곡이라는 바다를 건너는 듯 하고
건너 능선에서 사진을 촬영하고 있는데 딸은 기도하고 엄마는 주저 앉아 슬픔을 누르는 듯한 모습이 안타까워 보였습니다.
