인 해인사 산내암자이며 경상남
도유형문화재 제156호로 지정되
어 있다가 2000년 보물 제1300
호로 승격 지정되었다. 1592년 임진왜란과 정유재란 때 승려 2,
000여명을 모집해 승병장으로써 전장에서 큰 공을 세운 공로를 인
정 받은 사명대사가 수도하고 입
적한 암자로 알려져 있다. 1608
년 선조대왕의 하사로 창건하였
다고 전해지고 있으며 홍제암 이
란 명칭은 사명대사가 입적한 후 광해군이 내린 '자통홍제존자'란
시호에서 따왔다고 한다. 1614
년 혜구대사가 사명대사 진영을
봉안하기 위해 영당을 건립한 이
후 수차례 개수,중수가 이루어졌
으며 1979년 박정희대통령의 특
별예산을 편성하여 암자를 해체, 보수를 하여 오늘에 이르고 있다.
암자에는 1912년에 허균이 비문
을 짓고 세운 '자통홍제존자사명
송운대사석장비'(보물제1301호)가 있다. 이 비석은 한국인의 민
족혼을 불러일으킬 수 있다하여 일본인들이 네조각으로 파괴한
것을 보관하였다가 광복 이후 19
58년에 철봉과 석화로 수리하여 지금의 자리에 세웠놓았다고 한
다. 그리고 암자(영자각)에는 고
승 16명의 영정을 봉안하고 있다

하운,화곡,장섭,송파,평신,정월,부환,부응,돈암,모은,예봉,회은,해활, 등 이다. 차량으로 암자까 갈 수가 있지만 별도의 주차장은
없고 주변 공터에 주차를 해야 한
다. 해인사 박물관 주차장을 이용
하고 도보로 산내암자들을 둘러
보는 것을 추천 한다.
