1972년 12월 26일 홍천고등학교로 설립인가를 받고,
1973년 3월 11일 개교하였다.
1974년 7월 25일 홍천중학교를 이전, 합병하였으며,
1991년 3월 1일 병설중고에서 분리되었다.
교훈은 ‘정직’이며
교화는 철쭉, 교목은 주목이다.
기숙사 특화 고등학교이다.
운동장이 꽤 넓으며 옆에 홍천중학교가 있어서 중고등학생 공용으로
사용될 것 같다. 심지어 교가도 똑같다.
학교 위치도 읍내에서 높은 위치에 있어서 전망이 좋지만
오르막길때문에 접근성이 살짝 불편한 점이 없지않아 있을 것이다.
