February 2016. Have had a hard time finding a dentist that could speak English - actually explain what was going on and why I needed certain procedures done - and answer my questions. Every dentist I had been to in South Korea did one quick check and then always just said "root canal" - without any explanation or reason. Have heard this is very common in South Korea. So, not only was it nice to finally find a dentist that speaks English really well - the dental assistants that helped also spoke English - and even the front desk people spoke English. I had not had any dental work done in a long time because of the fear and almost "hatred" of dentists and dental clinics. Add in the lack of English in South Korea as another reason. This place was nothing like that. I walked in - and since I had traveled from out of town - they opened up a time for me to get a consultation right away. Dr. Seok-won Jang was great. He showed me X-rays and pictures of my teeth and explained all the problems - and what he thought might have to be done. I just finished the first procedure. He took off a crown that was broken - found that half the tooth was rotten - drilled away the bad part of the tooth - and then fixed the tooth enough so that the assistant could put a temporary crown back on. About two hours in the chair. The worst part? Getting the original freezing put in. The dentist and assistants were great with their work - no pain at all. During the original consultation, Dr. Jang had said there was a chance he would have to do a root canal after taking off the crown. But, after getting the crown off and taking an X-ray, he said the root was in better shape than he had thought - so a root canal was not necessary at this time. From my experience 95% of other dentists in South Korea would not have told me that - and just done the root canal. I have not had any dental work in a very long time - and Dr. Jang had said it shows - I will need a few more treatments to get some other teeth fixed - and root canals are possible. But, I am actually looking forward to my next appointments and getting everything taken care of - even if it does mean a root canal (or two) is necessary.
