그해 4월 25일 개교한 5년제 관립 춘천고등보통학교를 모태로 한다.
춘천고등보통학교는 1939년 3월 3일
공립 춘천중학교로 교명을 변경하였고,
1950년 6월 1일 학제변경으로 중학교와 고등학교가 분리된 뒤 1951년 6월 1일 춘천중학교로 제1회 개교기념일을 맞이하였다.
1998년 10월 2일 학교 전통관을 설치하였고, 2000년 7월 12일 학교 교육과정 운영 계획서 우수 학교로 지정되었다.
교훈은 "슬기로워라" "성실하라" "튼튼하라"
이며, 교목은 향나무, 교화는 백목련이다.
