히야신스 뿌리를 사다가 빈 화분에 심었다. 삼일 만에 파란싹이 올라오길래 밖은 춥지만 빨리 나와라, 어서 꽃잎과 향을 보여주라. 한달 하고도 이 주일, 지금 성급한 한 놈이 몇송이 꽃망울을 터뜨리고 진한 향을 내뿜는다. 열뿌리를 사다가 네 뿌리는 한 화분에 심고 네 뿌리는 생수병에 수경재배를, 한 뿌리는 사무실 책상에 가져다 놓았고, 한 뿌리는 싹을 틔우지 못하고 죽었다. 보는 것이다, 봄은. 꽃망울이 하나 올라 오고, 둘 올라 오고 한 대가 피고 두 대, 세 대가 꽃을 피우고... 가난한 나의 작은 방은 여덟 뿌리가 꽃망울을 벌리고 잔치를 벌이는 이 열흘 동안은 호사스런 사치에 가득할 것이다. 봄은 히야신스를 보는 것이다. 쓸쓸함과 차가움의 겨울을 배경으로 따스한 기운, 생명의 숨소리에다가 언젠가 좋은 일이 있으리라 철썩같이 믿었던 젊은 날의 허영심, 그 때의 혈기같은 꽃망울 터지는 순간의 찰라의 쾌감을 느낀다. 나에게 봄은 이미 왔다. 봄은 봄이기 때문이다.
