길이 2,564m, 높이 8.5m이며, 12연의 배수갑문이 설치되어
있고 그 길이는 150m에 이른다.
내·외자 377억 원의 공사비를 투입하여 1971년 3월에 착공,
1973년 12월에 완공되었다.
본래 안성천의 하류 일대는 해마다 홍수와 한발, 그리고
황해의 조수염해(潮水鹽害) 및 연안침식(沿岸浸蝕) 등
만성적인 재해를 입어오던 곳으로, 평택지구 대단위 농업
개발사업으로 방조제 건설이 추진되었다.
방조제가 축조됨으로써 저수량 1억 2,300만t에 달하는
인공담수호인 아산호(牙山湖)가 등장하여 경기도·충청남도에
걸친 2개시 2개군 지역의 홍한대책(洪旱對策)이 크게 개선되었을
뿐만 아니라 4,674㏊에 달하는 새로운 농지확보와 5만 4,983t의
미곡증산의 개발효과도 가져왔다.
그 밖에도 양어·양식사업의 터전을 마련하게 되었고,
제방 위에 너비 12m의 새로운 도로가 개설됨으로써 평택시와
아산시 사이를 쉽게 왕래할 수 있게 되었다.
또한, 1977년에 국민관광지의 지정과 함께 아산만 일대의 새로운
관광명소와 낚시터로 부각되면서 전국 각지에서 많은 관광객과
